Creamy Garlic Herb Buttermilk Salad Dressing

  • Author: Olivia
  • Total Time: 5 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Description

A rich, velvety homemade salad dressing made with buttermilk, mayo, and fresh garlic. It comes together in five minutes and offers a tangy, herbaceous flavor that is superior to store-bought versions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup full-fat mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons neutral oil (canola or vegetable)
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon dried dill
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • Black pepper (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Prep the garlic by peeling and mincing it finely, or mashing it into a paste with a pinch of salt.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the mayonnaise, sour cream, and neutral oil. Whisk until smooth.
  3. Add the buttermilk, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, and minced garlic to the bowl. Whisk vigorously until the mixture begins to emulsify.
  4. Add the dried dill, dried parsley, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Whisk again to combine.
  5. Taste the dressing and adjust seasoning with more salt, lemon, or garlic as needed.
  6. For best flavor, let the dressing rest in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
  7. Store in an airtight jar in the fridge for up to 5 days. Shake or stir well before using as it may thicken when chilled.

Notes

If the dressing is too thick, add more buttermilk one tablespoon at a time. If too thin, add more mayo or sour cream. Do not freeze this dressing as the dairy and oil may separate. For a spicy version, add red pepper flakes. For a honey twist, add 1 tablespoon of honey.
