Description
A quick, crispy, and affordable version of Bang Bang shrimp made in the air fryer. This recipe uses frozen shrimp and pantry staples to create a sweet, spicy, and creamy dish that costs under $7 and takes only 15 minutes to prepare.
Ingredients
- 12 oz frozen raw shrimp (16/20 or 21/25 count), thawed and dried
- 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 large egg white
- 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup sweet chili sauce
- 1–2 tbsp hot sauce (e.g., Frank’s RedHot or Sriracha)
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- Pinch of salt
- Cooking oil spray
Instructions
- Thaw frozen shrimp under cold water for 3-5 minutes, then pat them completely dry with paper towels to ensure the coating sticks.
- Set up a dredging station with three shallow bowls: Bowl 1 contains flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, and salt; Bowl 2 contains beaten egg white; Bowl 3 contains panko breadcrumbs.
- Dip each shrimp into the flour mixture, shaking off excess, then into the egg white, and finally roll in the panko, pressing gently to adhere.
- Preheat air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 3 minutes. Lightly spray the basket with oil.
- Place shrimp in a single layer in the air fryer basket (do not overcrowd). Lightly spray the tops with oil.
- Cook for 4 minutes, then flip shrimp carefully with tongs. Spray the other side with oil and cook for another 4-6 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
- While shrimp cook, whisk together mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, hot sauce, and sesame oil in a small bowl until smooth.
- Transfer cooked shrimp to a large bowl, pour sauce over them, and toss gently to coat. Serve immediately.
Notes
Ensure shrimp are completely dry before coating to prevent the breading from sliding off. Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket; cook in batches if necessary. Toss shrimp in sauce immediately before serving to maintain crispiness. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for 2 days and reheated in the air fryer at 350°F for 3-4 minutes.
